IRA Qualified Charitable Distributions

arrow

To donate to Family Services through a Qualified Charitable Distribution, you must be age 70 ½ or older and have a traditional IRA, SEP IRA, or SIMPLE IRA. You can then instruct your IRA custodian to directly transfer funds, up to a specified annual limit. This allows you to avoid paying taxes on the distribution while still contributing to charity.

Here’s a guide on how to donate through your IRA QCD:

  1. Contact Your IRA Custodian to notify them of your intention to make a QCD of a specified amount to Family Services. Your IRA custodian will then directly transfer the funds to Family Services, either through a check or electronic transfer.
  2. Keep Your Acknowledgment Letter from Family Services confirming the donation amount and date. You’ll need to report the QCD in your tax return on a Form 1040 or 1040-SR, subtracting the QCD from your total IRA distribution.
  3. Note: Annual IRA gifts cannot exceed $100,000.

Please notify Trish Prunty at tprunty@familyservicesny.org if you intend to make an IRA QCD.
