You Have the Right to Safe Communities
SNUG makes our streets safer by changing norms and addressing conflicts before they escalate into violence. Our team understands the lived realities of our community and builds relationships grounded in trust and respect, focusing on solutions that prioritize peace and dignity.
Overview
SNUG is simply “GUNS” spelled backwards, meant to show how we work to reverse harmful norms in our communities. Between our Street Outreach Workers, Social Workers, and Case Managers, we engage the individuals in our community who are at the highest risk of being affected by gun violence.
What We Do
Creating Opportunities
Our outreach workers mentor a select group of participants, connecting them with education, job opportunities, and more. We offer them unique experiences to help them see beyond their immediate world and envision new possibilities.
Intervention & Mediation
We work closely with our participants to defuse conflicts through mediation before they escalate into violence. When a shooting occurs, we get in front of the individuals and families involved to prevent retaliation.
Changing Norms
We canvass across the city, organize Peace Walks, and host other community violence to end a culture of accepting gun violence as a norm. After a shooting, we gather with those affected to take a stand against gun violence and prevent retaliation.
Guidance & Assistance
SNUG can help those affected by a crime with applications for assistance from the Office of Victim Services for expenses directly related to the crime.
- Medical and counseling bills
- Personal property essential to health, welfare, or safety
- Funeral and burial expenses
- Moving expenses
- Other costs as allowed
Quality Support
Between our social worker and case manager, we can help you work through your experience with gun violence or loss. We’re here to advocate on your behalf. From trauma counseling to assistance with the criminal justice system, we provide the guidance you need to show up as your best self.
Strengthening Community
Each year, we host block parties to build community in safe environments and provide information about voter registration, GED and college programs, and more.
Did You Know?
