The Haiti Project, Inc. engages students in a life-changing experiential education in global citizenship, fosters sustainable development in Haiti, and promotes Haitian art. In addition to the purchase and sale of original Haitian art, the Project’s contributions are guided by five initiatives in 45 villages: education, health care, reforestation, clean water access, and a women’s cooperative.
With a strong educational component, we are dedicated both to raising awareness of Haitian culture and society in the US and elsewhere, and to providing a hands-on, practical education in global citizenship.
Through art auctions and sales, we directly support the welfare of hundreds of Haitian artists and artisans.
These art sales in turn provide a means of support for funding education, healthcare, water access and purification, reforestation, and women’s initiatives in Chermaitre, a mountain village in the Northwest department of Haiti.
Founded at Vassar College in 2001 by Andrew and Lila Meade under the auspices of the Office of the Dean of the College, The Haiti Project has always been first and foremost about supporting Haiti, concerned mostly with fundraising for education, particularly supporting Haiti’s art industry and a school in the rural village of Chermaitre. With the encouragement and energy of students, faculty, administrators, alumni and the community, The Haiti Project has evolved into a powerful teaching and mentoring model. We hold art sales on the east coast as a primary fundraising structure but also collaborate with other organizations to further our mutual goals.
