Mission

The Hudson Valley Justice Center (HVJC) provides high-quality legal counsel in civil matters where basic human needs are at stake. We represent poor and low-income individuals who cannot afford an attorney, regardless of immigration status. Pursuit of this mission includes handling individual, class action, and other impact cases, as well as partnering with others to promote a meaningful access the American Justice System, regardless of economic or social condition.

About

HVJC believes that access to safe and affordable housing is a basic human right and no tenant should face the loss of their home without legal representation. Our Housing Unit assists individual tenants and tenant groups in a range of legal matters, including illegal lockouts, non-payment and hold-over proceedings, lease violations, housing code violations, improper rent increases, utility shut offs and sub-metering, habitability matters, housing discrimination, and condemnation advocacy. Communities across Hudson Valley are experiencing an unprecedented need for free legal services that is growing exponentially and outpacing available resources. Currently, HVJC is the only organization that represents noncitizens in eviction proceedings across Westchester, Orange, Dutchess, Putnam, Sullivan, and Ulster Counties.
